French Drain Installation

A French drain is a trench dug below the problem area, filled with gravel, with a perforated pipe running through it. The water collects in the gravel, gets into the pipe, and flows out to wherever the grade lets it go. Done right, a French drain is the most reliable fix for groundwater problems.

The work that matters is in the parts you can’t see after backfill: how deep the trench goes, what fabric wraps the pipe, what kind of stone fills the trench, and where the discharge end terminates. A French drain installed without fabric will clog with silt in a few years. One that terminates in a low spot just moves the water 20 feet.

Yard Grading

A lot of drainage problems are grading problems. If the yard slopes toward the house instead of away from it, no amount of pipe will fix that. We grade the yard back to where it should be: a slight slope away from the foundation, swales running to natural drainage points, and high spots cut down where they’re trapping water.

Erosion Control

For slopes that are washing out, we look at the cause before the fix. If it’s water volume, the answer is usually a catch basin or swale to slow the flow before it hits the slope. If it’s the slope itself, retaining walls, blankets, or planted stabilization. The grain farm background helps here. We understand how Ohio soil moves when it gets too much water.

Common Drainage Questions

The clearest signs: a wet spot in the yard that doesn’t dry out, water pooling against a foundation wall, a basement that gets damp after every rain, or a slope that’s eroding because too much water is running over it. If the problem is groundwater (water coming up from below) or surface water that needs to be intercepted, a French drain is usually the answer.

Grading is reshaping the surface of a piece of land, including building it up or cutting it down. Re-sloping is specifically changing the angle of an existing surface so water moves a different direction. Most drainage projects involve both.

Sometimes. Gutters catch roof water, but if the downspouts dump that water right next to the foundation, you’ve just concentrated the problem instead of solving it. Real fixes usually involve burying the downspout discharge 10+ feet away from the house.
