What Septic Installation Actually Involves
Ballard’s Acres & Excavating provides septic test holes and full septic system installation across seven Northeast Ohio counties.
Services include pre-permit test holes, tank pit excavation, leach field installation, and full system replacement.
Septic Test Holes
Test holes are the first step for almost any rural septic project. Before you can apply for a permit, a soil scientist needs to look at the soil profile to determine what kind of system the site can support. We dig the holes to the depth and locations the health department or soil scientist specifies, then get out of the way so they can do their work.
Most test hole jobs are a half-day to a full day. The cost is usually a few hundred dollars depending on how many holes the site needs and how far we’re traveling.
Full Septic System Installation
A complete septic install includes the tank pit, the tank set, the leach field or mound system, the connection lines between them, and all the backfill and finish grading after. We coordinate with the licensed installer, the health department inspector, and the homeowner so the schedule actually holds.
Why Soil Knowledge Matters for Septic
Septic siting is mostly about reading the dirt. Some soils perc fast and need a smaller leach field. Some soils won’t perc at all and require a mound system or alternative treatment. Some sites have a high water table that limits where the system can go.
We farm the same ground we install on. We know which spots in Carroll County hold water, which Stark County soils drain fast, and which sites are going to fail an inspection before we even start digging. That knowledge saves homeowners from spending money on systems that won’t pass or won’t last.
Working With the Health Department
The county health department (Carroll, Stark, Tuscarawas, etc.) handles permits, inspections, and final approval. We work with their inspectors on every job. If you haven’t started the permit process yet, we can walk you through what’s needed: getting a soil scientist out, applying for the permit, scheduling the inspection, and getting approval before backfill.
