What Hardscape Looks Like

Ballard’s Acres & Excavating builds hardscape and outdoor features across seven Northeast Ohio counties: sandstone walls, block retaining walls, block patios, paver walkways, and custom outdoor projects.

Sandstone Walls

Sandstone is a working-farm material. It’s locally available, ages well, and looks like it belongs on Ohio property because it does. We build sandstone walls as decorative front-yard features, as retaining walls on slopes, and as the foundation for patios and outdoor seating areas. Each wall is hand-built from stone selected for the job, and the work shows in the long run.

Block Retaining Walls

For taller walls or walls holding back significant grade, engineered block systems are usually the right answer. They install faster, they’re predictable in their load ratings, and they’re available in styles that work with the rest of your property. We size the wall to the actual load it’ll carry, install the proper drainage behind it, and tie the cap and footer in correctly. A retaining wall is only as good as what’s behind it.

Block Patios & Pavers

The difference between a patio that holds for 20 years and one that shifts in three is the base prep. We excavate to depth, lay compacted gravel base, screed sand to grade, then set the block or pavers with proper joint spacing and edging to hold them in place. The patio sheds water away from the house, drains properly underneath, and stays level.

Custom Outdoor Projects

We’ve built complete pool surrounds, multi-tier garden walls, fire pit areas, gazebo pads, and one-off outdoor features that don’t fit a standard category. If you have a project in mind that’s not on the list above, give us a call. Most of the time, we can do it.

Why Hardscape and Drainage Go Together

A lot of hardscape failures are actually drainage failures. A retaining wall that wasn’t drained behind it will tip out within a few years. A patio that wasn’t graded right will pool water and crack the joints. We handle both sides of the work, so the hardscape gets installed with the drainage it needs to last.

Common Hardscaping Questions

The cost of sandstone walls in our service area depends on height, length, and how much excavation and drainage work the site needs. We pride ourselves in good quality work for a fair price. Fill out the form below and we’ll come look at the property and give you a real number.

Block walls are engineered systems with predictable load ratings, faster installation, and a cleaner modern look. Sandstone walls are hand-built, take longer, and look like they belong on rural Ohio property. Both can hold significant load when built correctly.

For walls under 4 feet, usually no. For walls 4 feet and taller, you’ll typically need a permit and sometimes an engineered drawing. We can walk you through what your county requires.

Yes, and we always do. A retaining wall without proper drainage behind it will fail. We install gravel backfill, drain tile, and a discharge path on every wall we build.

Yes. Pool surrounds, fire pit areas, outdoor kitchens, and one-off builds are all in scope. Call us with what you have in mind.
